Succession Days celebration this Saturday in Rough and Ready
On April 7, 1850, Rough and Ready, California became the first town to secede from the United States. Its citizens were fed up with the U.S. government after a mining tax was imposed on all claims, as well as a lack of law and order in the area which authorities would do nothing about. A town meeting was called, resulting in the formation of the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. A constitution was drafted, a president elected, and a cabinet formed. The residents chose E. F. Brundage as their president and his first act was to appoint a Secretary of State and a Republic Marshall. The Republic lasted approximately three months. What brought this great Republic down? With the Fourth of July approaching neighboring towns were preparing grand celebrations, which would include speeches, parades, and other festivities. The citizens of Rough and Ready felt left out, and before long, patriotism replaced their displeasure with the government. Besides, they wanted to celebrate. At the last minute a mass meeting was called and the Independent Republic of Rough and Ready was dissolved...and the celebration, some say, has never stopped. Saturday, June 28 Rough and Ready Succession Days Activities begin at 8:00am with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Rough and Ready Volunteer Fire Dept. ($6.00 adults/ $4.00 children). Other activities that will run through the day include; • The Saga of Rough and Ready, a raucous musical melodrama performed by the Rough and Ready Rascals • Live Music provided by The Fruit Jar Pickers • Crafts and Peddlers Fair • Live Blacksmith Demonstrations with Bill Knorr • Antique Car Parade and Display by the Gra-Neva A’s • Food and Beverages Available All Day • 1850’s Costumed Characters • Free Petting Zoo, Free Jump House and Face Painting for the kids There is no admission charge for activities, but bake sale items and other souvenirs will be sold with all proceeds benefiting the Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce, Volunteer Fire Department, and Grange.

Community Event
July brings cool celebrations to Nevada City
Beginning in mid July, Wednesday hot summer days give way to “Summer Nights” celebrations in Nevada City. On July 15th, 22nd and 29th the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce transforms the city’s historic downtown district into an area filled with outdoor stages, arts, crafts, classic cars, food and music. This will be the 19th year of “Summer Nights” which runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. There is no admission charged for entrance to the event and activities. The stage shows will again feature some the leading Foothills musicians. With the downtown area closed to traffic for the event, a shuttle service will be available for a small fee. Children’s Festival transforms Pioneer Park back in time
On Friday, July 17th The Children’s Festival will return to Pioneer Park in Nevada City. The park, located at 425 Nimrod Street, will be transformed into a lively Renaissance Faire for children. This year’s festival will include over twenty arts and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, a magician, face-painters, a bridge-guarding troll, medieval fencing, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon. Founded in 1971 by Pat Cobler and Ilse Barnhart, the Children’s Festival continued as an annual summer event for 19 years. It was revived in 2003, after a lapse of 13 years to give children of all ages a chance to enjoy a time of lowtech fun, where imagination, not automation, rules the day. Children will be able to make their own costumes, swords, shields and magic wands, and engage in wood block construction, soapstone carving and clay modeling. A medieval cardboard castle will be available for all to paint. Last year over 2,000 children and adults attended the Children’s Festival, an event that provides families with an opportunity to come together and return to a simpler time. This year’s Children’s Festival will once again have two sessions, from 9am - 12 pm and from 5pm - 8pm. Admission to each session is $3. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from the Soroptimists of the Sierra Foothills.

Succession Days celebration this Saturday in Rough and Ready
On April 7, 1850, Rough and Ready, California became the first town to secede from the United States. Its citizens were fed up with the U.S. government after a mining tax was imposed on all claims, as well as a lack of law and order in the area which authorities would do nothing about. A town meeting was called, resulting in the formation of the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. A constitution was drafted, a president elected, and a cabinet formed. The residents chose E. F. Brundage as their president and his first act was to appoint a Secretary of State and a Republic Marshall. The Republic lasted approximately three months. What brought this great Republic down? With the Fourth of July approaching neighboring towns were preparing grand celebrations, which would include speeches, parades, and other festivities. The citizens of Rough and Ready felt left out, and before long, patriotism replaced their displeasure with the government. Besides, they wanted to celebrate. At the last minute a mass meeting was called and the Independent Republic of Rough and Ready was dissolved...and the celebration, some say, has never stopped. Saturday, June 28 Rough and Ready Succession Days Activities begin at 8:00am with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Rough and Ready Volunteer Fire Dept. ($6.00 adults/ $4.00 children). Other activities that will run through the day include; • The Saga of Rough and Ready, a raucous musical melodrama performed by the Rough and Ready Rascals • Live Music provided by The Fruit Jar Pickers • Crafts and Peddlers Fair • Live Blacksmith Demonstrations with Bill Knorr • Antique Car Parade and Display by the Gra-Neva A’s • Food and Beverages Available All Day • 1850’s Costumed Characters • Free Petting Zoo, Free Jump House and Face Painting for the kids There is no admission charge for activities, but bake sale items and other souvenirs will be sold with all proceeds benefiting the Rough and Ready Chamber of Commerce, Volunteer Fire Department, and Grange.

Community Event
July brings cool celebrations to Nevada City
Beginning in mid July, Wednesday hot summer days give way to “Summer Nights” celebrations in Nevada City. On July 15th, 22nd and 29th the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce transforms the city’s historic downtown district into an area filled with outdoor stages, arts, crafts, classic cars, food and music. This will be the 19th year of “Summer Nights” which runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. There is no admission charged for entrance to the event and activities. The stage shows will again feature some the leading Foothills musicians. With the downtown area closed to traffic for the event, a shuttle service will be available for a small fee. On Friday, July 17th The Children’s Festival will return to Pioneer Park in Nevada City. The park, located at 425 Nimrod Street, will be transformed into a lively Renaissance Faire for children. This year’s festival will include over twenty arts and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, a magician, face-painters, a bridge-guarding troll, medieval fencing, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon. Founded in 1971 by Pat Cobler and Ilse Barnhart, the Children’s Festival continued as an annual summer event for 19 years. It was revived in 2003, after a lapse of 13 years to give children of all ages a chance to enjoy a time of lowtech fun, where imagination, not automation, rules the day. Children will be able to make their own costumes, swords, shields and magic wands, and engage in wood block construction, soapstone carving and clay modeling. A medieval cardboard castle will be available for all to paint. Last year over 2,000 children and adults attended the Children’s Festival, an event that provides families with an opportunity to come together and return to a simpler time. This year’s Children’s Festival will once again have two sessions, from 9am - 12 pm and from 5pm - 8pm. Admission to each session is $3. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from the Soroptimists of the Sierra Foothills.
