Nevada City Film Festival August 20th- 23rd
The 9th Annual Nevada City Film Festival, NCFF, promises to be another exciting showcase of independent films. Every year thousands of film enthusiasts from around the world gather for a long, 4-day weekend of movie viewing. This year’s NCFF will feature 30 short films that will showcase the creative, boundary-pushing work of both film making’s raising talent and veteran independent directors. Past attendees include director Mike Mikes (Thumbsucker), music supervisor Brian Reitzell (Lost in Translation, Stranger Than Fiction) and documentary filmmakers Arne Johnson and Shane King (GIRLS ROCK). This year a dozen or more filmmakers will be available to answer questions from the audience after each of their films are screened. The NCFF is a one-of-a-

August 2: Jesse Winchester, Singer/Song Writer. After growing up in Memphis, Winchester received his draft notice in 1967 and moved to Montreal, Canada, rather than serve in the military. In 1969, he met Robbie Robertson of the Band, who helped launch his recording career. His songs have been recorded by Jimmy Buffet, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, Michael Martin Murphy, Nicolette Larson and others. Show time is 7:00pm with admission of $25.00. August 20: Opening Night of the Nevada City Film Festival featuring the film Like Dandelion Dust. Show time is 7:00pm. Admission is $15.00 for all ages. TV Chef to visit Grass Valley
Community Asian Theater of the Sierras (CATS) will host a cooking demonstration and book signing by Chinese celebrity chef Martin Yan of the popular TV series Yan Can Cook! The event will take place at the Center for the Arts, 314 West Main Street in Grass Valley on Saturday, August 29 at 2:00pm. Chef Yan, who started cooking at the age of 12, will share secrets to great Chinese cooking as well as talk about his recent trips to China. He has been the host of the TV show Yan Can Cook since 1978 and has appeared several times as a guest judge on The Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Chef Yan also received the title of “Master Chef ” from the American Culinary Federation. You will have an opportunity to purchase cook books and have them personally autographed. Starting, Wednesday August 12, Foothills residents will again be able to enjoy five days of family fun that make the Nevada County Fair one of the top rated county fairs in all of the Western United States. With this year’s theme being “A Hare’s Magical A-Fair”, fun comes in the form of five different entertainment stages, carnival rides and games, barns full of livestock, interactive games, food contests, rodeo, monster trucks, demolition derby and more. It’s easy to see why the Fair has been voted Nevada County’s best event for nine straight years. Check out the schedule of fair entertainment, activities and demonstrations on pages 14 through 21. The popular AG Mechanics Auction will be held on Friday with the Junior Livestock Auction held Sunday. These events normally raise over $400,000 for local youth in agriculture. The 9th Annual Nevada City Film Festival, NCFF, promises to be another exciting showcase of independent films. Every year thousands of film enthusiasts from around the world gather for a long, 4-day weekend of movie viewing. This year’s NCFF will feature 30 short films that will showcase the creative, boundary-pushing work of both film making’s raising talent and veteran independent directors. Past attendees include director Mike Mikes (Thumbsucker), music supervisor Brian Reitzell (Lost in Translation, Stranger Than Fiction) and documentary filmmakers Arne Johnson and Shane King (GIRLS ROCK). In 1969, he met Robbie Robertson of the Band, who helped launch his recording career. TV Chef to visit Grass Valley
Community Asian Theater of the Sierras (CATS) will host a cooking demonstration and book signing by Chinese celebrity chef Martin Yan of the popular TV series Yan Can Cook! The event will take place at the Center for the Arts, 314 West Main Street in Grass Valley on Saturday, August 29 at 2:00pm. Chef Yan, who started cooking at the age of 12, will share secrets to great Chinese cooking as well as talk about his recent trips to China. He has been the host of the TV show Yan Can Cook since 1978 and has appeared several times as a guest judge on The Food Network’s Iron Chef America. Chef Yan also received the title of “Master Chef ” from the American Culinary Federation. You will have an opportunity to purchase cook books and have them personally autographed.
