Great Job NU Miners Football
For the fourth time in their storied history the Nevada Union Miners are Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 Champions. With their 20-2 win over Monterey Trail of Elk Grove the Miners put the wraps on a 13-1 season. By winning the section NU was hoping to represent Northern California in the Division 1 CIF State Bowl Championship game, but a selection committee gave the invitation to Bellamie Prep of San Jose, bringing one of the most successful seasons in NU history to a close.
2009 was a year of challenge for many! Here’s hoping your 2010 will feature less challenge and more joy and prosperity. Oh, and good luck with those diets, less time at the office, and getting organized resolutions.

Environmental Film Festival comes to Nevada City
he 8th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival is again coming to Nevada City. From January 15th to January 17th 135 films, 35 premieres and 85 speakers will be featured at various locations around Nevada City, including the Nevada Theater, Miners Foundry, the Odd Fellows and Veterans Hall, and Nevada City Elementary. According to a South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) press release the Film Festival is the largest environmental film festival in the United States. “Fresh, Local, Wild” is a consistent theme in this year’s films and featured topics which include adventure, food and water, energy and resource consumption and wildlife. A festival highlight, Saturday morning cartoons, will again return to the Nevada Theater. Jason Rainey, SYRCL Executive Director says this year’s festival has assembled a cross-section of environmental and adventure stories, images and individuals. The public is welcomed to mingle with local filmmakers, activists and artists. “You’ll leave the weekend with an inspirational ‘how to’ manual for citizens activism.” said Rainey, who has been producing the Film Festival since 2003. New this year is The Media Lounge, the hub of all communications for the Film Festival. The Media Lounge will be centrally located at the Film Festivals headquarter in downtown Nevada City and feature up-to-date information, photos and videos as well as host interviews, photo-ops and roundtable discussions. Tickets prices are wide ranging with some Film Festival events being free. For a complete listing of films, times,
T
location and pricing visit www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org, or call 530-2655961 for more information. The South Yuba River Citizens League began in 1983 as a small group of concerned citizens who banded together to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. The dam projects have been defeated and 39 miles of the South Yuba became protected under
Wild and Scenic designation. SYRCL and it’s over 500 volunteers now collaborates with national, state, and local agencies on a variety of issues including salmon and steelhead restoration in the Yuba River, non-dam flood control, and water quality monitoring. In addition, SYRCL hosts other annual events for the community, including an auction, conferences, and river cleanups.
Patrick Stewart to be part of SYRCL Film Festival
One of the films to be premiered at this year’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival is Seth Warren’s “Nature Propelled” which features the narration of actor Patrick Stewart. Stewart is best known for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Wars Next Generation movies and television shows and Professor Charles Xavier in the recent X-Men movies. Stewart and Warren met at the 2007 Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival where Stewart presented Warren with the Best Picture award for his documentary “Oil + Water”. Stewart claimed that the film was “one of the most extraordinary accounts of man’s enthusiasm, passion, courage, and more than anything else, the desire to have a good time.” He then offered to help Warren with his next project by offering his well-known voice. According to Warren, the Nevada City event is the perfect place to premier his latest project. “Wild & Scenic was the natural place to premiere my new film, Nature Propelled. As a People’s Choice Award-winner for Oil
888-7653
+ Water at the 2008 festival, I know W&S has the ideal audience for my style of film, especially with its
focus on conservation. Nevada City is one of my mountain towns with the perfect atmosphere for an environmental film festival.” Both Stewart and Warren will be making an appearance at the showing of “Nature Propelled” Saturday night around 8:30pm. Both will address attendees during a Q&A session following the film as well as possibly making an appearance at Saturday night’s Gala Event.

Jan 9: Blues Concert Dance Party featuring Joe Louis Walker. Robert Silve of Verve Records says Joe Louis Walker “ranks with the blues elite.” It’s a chance to dance the night away with an artist who has been nominated for five 2009 Blues Music Awards, including Album of the Year and Contemporary Male Artist of the Year. For ticket and dance times visit www.minersfoundry.org. Jan 9: Ondrej Smeykal and Stephen Kent. The pair has been described as a musical Tete e Tete between the two most innovative and talked about Didjeridu players in the world. A Didjeridu is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia. Visit www.centerforthearts.com for tickets and show time information. Jan 16: Will Durst, The Lieutentant Governor of the State of Confusion. Sweeping both sides of the aisle with a quiver full of arrows dipped in common sense, Durst’s comedy transcends party ties, having performed at events honoring former Presidents Bill Clinton and George HW Bush as well as appearances at both a Mayors Convention and Governors Conference. Outraged and utrageous, Durst is as current as today’s headlines, as accurate as a sniper, and universally acknowledged by even his peers as the nation’s foremost political comic.
