C
ongratulations go out to our own Mary Rist. She is the recipient of the Foothills Marketplace/Auburn Trader Employee of the Year Award given out at the recent Company employee appreciation party. Mary “works the phones” in our telemarketing department and the Company’s classified ads. The Penn Valley resident has been with Foothills Marketplace owner Brehm Communications, Inc. for over 14 years working with the former Grass Valley Trader, the Auburn Trader and various other Brehm owned area newspapers. Fellow FMP staffers say, “Job well done Mary!”
A tip of the FMP hat goes out to the winners of the Nevada City Chambers “2009 Achievement Awards.”

Duane Strawser is the winner of the Elza Kilroy Award for outstanding community service. Strawser is the owner of Tour of Nevada City Bicycle Shop. Pat and Diane Dyer are the winners of the Stan Hall Architectural Award for renovations of their store Utopian Stone. Dan Reinhart garners the New Construction Award for his stone masonry work that is seen all around Nevada City and Tom Taylor is the winner of the of the Dr. Leland and Sally Lewis Performing Arts Award for his work in local theatre productions. The award winners will be recognized on January 30th at the Nevada City Chamber Installation Dinner. Former Nevada Union Miner football player Spencer Havner had a roller coaster ride of emotions in a recent NFL playoff game. The NFL rookie caught a late fourth quarter touchdown pass to tie the game with Phoenix only to watch the Cardinals return a fumble for the winning score in overtime. Havner played for NU before heading to UCLA. Speaking of NU football, the 2009 Sac Joaquin champs were honored by both the Grass Valley and Nevada City city councils at their respective meetings January 12th and 13th. The Miners finished the season 13-1. Chocoholics rejoice! The 5th Annual A Taste of Chocolate is coming to Old Town Auburn on, when else, Valentines Day Sunday, February 14th from noon until 3:00pm. Admission price is $20.00 as it is a fundraiser for the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Over 25 merchants and restaurants will have special treats available such as Cherry Cordials, Chocolate Covered Oreos, Chocolate Biscotti, Warm Bittersweet Chocolate Cake, Fudge, Chocolate Mocha Cheese Cake, Raspberry Truffle Brownies, Chocolate Fondue and Chocolate Croissants, just to name a few. For more information, visit www.oldtownauburnca.com. The next FMP will be arriving in your mail on February 25th. Have a great month. The FMP Staff

its run in late February at Off Broad Street in Nevada City. Cost for the evening activities is $45.00. Current Chamber members should have received their invitations. For more information or to make reservations contact the Grass Valley, Nevada County Chamber at 273-4667. The Grass Valley-Nevada County Chamber is an organization of the business community which operates to promote responsible balanced economic growth, provide quality service to members, enhance visitor services and activities and to market the community as a business, recreational, industrial and agricultural site. Yearly membership fees are based on a businesses number of employees with rate structures also available for Not for Profit and private individuals. According to Chamber President Mary Ann Mueller the Grass Valley, Nevada County Chamber currently has around 550 members (a complete listing of members can be found at on their web site listed below). According to the Chamber web site, B&C True Value Home Center of Grass Valley holds the honors of being the longest running member at 67 years. They have resided at their current 243 Mill Street location (pictured) since the mid-1980s in the completely renovated, historic Lola Montez House. Over the course of its 100 years the Chamber has had many Grass Valley locations including the Union Building on Mill Street. There is no record of were the first Chamber office was located. Mueller’s speculation is that early Chamber members would simply meet at various area business locations. She said the earliest know Grass Valley Chamber Banquet was held in February 1916, the cost of the meal was 75 cents. Nevada City loves
Mardi Gras!
T
his year on Valentine’s Day, cupid will be sporting more than just diapers and a bow and arrow. He will be wearing strings of beads and eating Moon Pies as Nevada City’s Mardi Gras shares his weekend of love. On February 13th and 14th gaily masked characters, pirates, Cajun cookin’ and midwinter fun come to the Sierra foothills as Mardi Gras 2010 will be celebrated with Old West style. This year’s 18th annual celebration kicks off on Saturday night February 13th with the annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball in historic Miners Foundry at 325 Spring Street. The masquerade ball runs from 8 pm to midnight and features dancing to the live southern rock of the Holcomb Brothers Band. Mardi Gras costumes are encouraged but not required. Traditional Cajun food will be available, including Cajun sausage sandwiches, chicken and sausage gumbo, Manuale prawns, southern style cole slaw, red beans and rice and bread pudding. Beads, masks and official T-shirts will be available
The Origins of Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras in New Orleans is actually part of a longer “Carnival” season. The New Orleans Carnival season, with roots in preparing for the start of the Christian season of Lent, starts after Twelfth Night, January 6th, and concludes the 12 Days of Christmas. It is a season of parades, balls, parties and at one time “coming out” parties for young women at debutante balls. Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras in French), the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras was brought to Louisiana by early French settlers. The first record of the celebration is in 1699 as part of an observance of Catholic practice. The starting date of festivities in New Orleans is unknown but written history notes that in 1743 the custom of Carnival balls was already established. In 1833 Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville, a rich plantation owner of French descent, raised money to fund an official Mardi Gras celebration with the first Mardi Gras parade held in 1857. While war, economic, political, and weather conditions sometimes led to cancellation of some

or all major parades, especially during the American Civil War, World War I and World War II, New Orleans has always celebrated Carnival. 1972 was the last year in which large parades went through the narrow streets of the city’s old French Quarter neighborhood due to larger floats, huge crowds and safety concerns. Major parades now take place outside the Quarter, especially on the wider Canal Street.

for purchase. Masquerade ball tickets are $10.00 in advance and, if available, $15.00 at the door. This event usually sells out so advance tickets are highly recommended. A nohost bar will be available and admission is offered only to those 21 and older. For Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball tickets and information contact the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce at 132 Main
Street, 265-2692 or visit their web site at www.nevadacitychamber.com. On Sunday, February 14th, Nevada City’s Broad Street becomes a Northern California version of New Orleans’ Bourbon Street as merry spectators fill the downtown historic district for the annual Mardi Gras parade. The family fun parade will move down Broad Street beginning at 2 p.m. Colorfully masked Continued on page 8

Everyone is encouraged to wear their own festive Mardi Gras attire. Sunday’s Mardi Gras celebration will also include a Street Faire from 11:00am to 4:00 pm. Food, drink, craft and clothing vendors will set up booths on North Pine and Commercial streets, with plenty of room for families with children and baby strollers. Mardi Gras officials remind attendees that no glass containers will be allowed with a zero tolerance policy for unacceptable behavior.

Cupid, the symbol of love, is associated with Valentine’s Day because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards and gifts holding a bow and arrows as he is believed to use magical arrows to arouse feelings of love.

Pilgrims would send confections such as sugar wafers, sweetmeats and sugar plums to the one they’d promised to marry. These gifts were of great value because they contained the rare product, sugar. In the late 1800’s beet sugar became more widely used and available. Sweet gifts continue to be cherished and enjoyed.

So why do we celebrate Presidents’ Day in February?
M
onday February 15th is Presidents’ Day, a day off for many as it is a federal holiday. But why do we celebrate our leaders in February? Is it because our first President, George Washington was born on February 22nd? Add to that, one of the countries favorite former presidents, Abraham Lincoln, was born on February 12th. Of the 44 men who have held the office of the Presidency only two others were born in February, William Henry Harrison (Feb. 9th) and California’s own Ronald Reagan (Feb 6th). Maybe we should celebrate Presidents’ Day in October, the month with the most presidential birthdays with six. June and September would be out of the running as they each feature only one.
Presidents’ Day kind of started in 1880 when Washington’s Birthday was declared a feder-
Holiday Act with the purpose of not to honor any particular President, but to honor the office of the Presidency. The name Presidents’ Day, while still not an act of Congress, became popular in the mid1980’s when advertisers started using the term. It was especially popular with furniture stores and auto dealerships. And the name stuck. Today the name Presidents’ Day has been accepted by most citizens, states and makers of calendars.
al holiday only in Washington, DC. It was the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen. In 1885 it was expanded by Congress to include all federal offices in the country. In 1968 Congress voted down a measure that would rename the day Presidents’ Day. On January 1, 1971, the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday

Why it’s important to you to shop local
I
n a world that seems to be become more standardized and “cookie cutter” in its approach, it is important to support what is unique and special about our area. One of the primary things local residents can do is shop local merchants first. By shopping locally, you are not only investing in your community area but as you will read you are also investing in yourself.

Shopping local: • Creates jobs...and boy we could use a few more of those right now! • Allows local businesses to invest back into our community through charities, youth programs and schools. • Can save you money (gas, meals, delivery costs and isn’t your time worth something, too?). • Is relationship driven. Local businesses value you more. They survive by their reputation and your repeat business. • Creates a strong, local business environment that will lead to more competition and diversity, which translates to more shopping choices for you. • Can be full of surprises! Discovery can be almost completely lacking in a big-box chain store, but in a small local shop whose inventory is carefully chosen by the owner, you can find all sorts of unexpected treasures.

Tell the world about your favorite drive
S
o what is your favorite area road to travel? Pleasant Valley Road to Bridgeport, Highway 20 above Nevada City heading to Tahoe, Highway 49 to Downieville or a road less traveled? For the dedicated traveler there’s still nothing like getting in your car and taking a trip along area roads and America’s highways. Half the fun of road trips, in the minds of many, is getting home and telling friends and family about the adventure and the roads they traveled. In the past, drivers’ road stories were largely told by word of mouth to a few people at a time. Now drivers can tell their tales to millions via the Internet. FavoriteRoad.com is a new Web site that features America’s favorite highways and byways. The site encourages you to post your favorite roads and explain why you like them. Simply log on to submit a photo and story of your favorite road. Use links posted on the site to share your road via popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Your submission may even win a prize in contest giveaways.

“Midnight at the Grass Valley Oasis”
Folk-Blues singer Maria Muldaur will be making a visit to Grass Valley on Saturday, February 6 at the Center for the Arts. The concert begins at 8:00pm with tickets prices at $22.00 advanced and $25.00 at the door. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available for $35.00 with include reserves seating, VIP lounge and one free drink ticket. Tickets can be purchased online at www.thecenterforhtearts.org or at the box office at 314 West Main Street in Grass Valley. Muldaur is best known for her 1974 hit song “Midnight at the Oasis.” She began her career in the early 1960s as Maria D’Amato, performing with John Sebastian and Dave Grisman of the Even Dozen Jug Band. She then joined Jim Weskit & His Jug Band as a featured vocalist and occasional violinist. During this time, she was part of the Greenwich Village scene that included Bob Dylan. Some of her recollections of that period, particularly with respect to Dylan, appear in the 2005 documentary film “No Direction Home.” She married fellow Jug Band member Geoff Muldaur. After the Weskit group broke up the two produced two albums. She began her solo career when their marriage ended in 1972 but retained her married name. Her first solo album “Maria Moldaur,” released in 1973, contained “Midnight at the Oasis” which climbed to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. Around this time Muldaur established a relationship with the Grateful Dead and their family, opening for some Grateful Dead shows in the summer of 1974. Her 2005 release Sweet Lovin’ Ol’ Soul was nominated for both a W.C. Handy Award and a Grammy award in the Traditional Blues Category. She continues to record music in the traditions of folk music including her most recent release entitled “Maria Muldaur and Her Garden of Joy”, a jug band album that features old friends John Sebastian, Taj Mahal and Dave Grisman.
On the Foothills Stage
Feb 11: Cyrano de Bergerac, presented by Paul Emery Productions of Nevada City. It’s the classic tale of an individual whose long nose serves him as a burden and motivator. Directed by John Deaderick and Theo Black, who also star in leading roles, the play features 21 local actors and 40 parts. Deaderick spent several months editing, rewriting and condensing the original 1906 classic. Performances are on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ticket information and show times are available by calling the Nevada Theater at 478-1974. The Nevada Theater is located at 401 Broad Street in Nevada City. Feb 12: SambaDA. Musically uniting the Americas, drawing from percussion-based styles of South and Central American samba and salsa, and blending them with the funk and reggae beats familiar to crowds of North America. The entire band has developed a unique musical style with a universal appeal. The septet has conquered the club and festival circuit with its wildly explosive Carnival-like performances. The band is known for its high-energy percussion, danceable grooves and visually dynamic show. Visit www.minersfoundry.org for tickets and show time information. Feb 13: Fred Eaglesmith. An award-winning and acclaimed music auteur of the highest order, Eaglesmith has forged a singular and distinctive legacy with his songs, recordings, and live performances. He has done so as a fiercely independent and original artist through the sheer power of his music. He has released 17 albums over the last three decades, many on his own label, and has consistently

evoked critical raves while being compared to a broad blue-ribbon list of musical icons. Visit www.centerforthearts.org for tickets and show time information. Feb 14: Mads Tolling. This internationally renowned violinist, violist, and composer is a member of the two time Grammy Award-Winning Turtle Island Quartet. As a soloist, he regularly tours as jazz violinist with the acclaimed bassist Stanley Clarke and his touring band. Since 2007 Mads has led his own group, Mads Tolling Quartet. His latest recording, “The Playmaker” released in the fall of 2009, features bass legend Stanley Clarke and jazz greats Russell Ferrante & Stefon Harris. Visit www.centerforthearts.org for tickets and show time information. Feb 19: Nine-8th Irish CD Release Party. This highly acclaimed Sacramento band is celebrating the release of their second CD entitled “Out on the Ocean.” The band combines the talents of five accomplished musicians in presenting music that is “Irish and a wee bit more.” The “wee bit more” is the incorporation of their experiences in bluegrass, jazz, country and contest fiddling into traditional Irish music. Nine-8ths Irish enjoys sharing their love of this dynamic music with audiences throughout northern California and beyond. Visit www.centerforthearts.org for tickets and show time information. Feb 21: Debbie Poryes. Debbie discovered the piano at age five, and loved practicing Chopin and show tunes until Simon and Garfunkel came along. She then switched to singing and playing guitar. When she heard jazz for the first time at age 18, she wondered where this incredible music had been all her life. It inspired her to return to the piano, listenFebruary 2010
ing to and learning from her new and continuing heroes Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and other greats. In those days there were no jazz courses at U.C. Berkeley, so she decided to stop going to school and devote herself full-time to jazz piano. Poryes has recorded a new quartet CD, “Catch Your Breath,” which will be released on Origin Records in March. The new recording features four new original compositions in addition to Debbie’s imaginative arrangements of standards. Visit www.centerforthearts.org for tickets and show time information. Feb 21: Robert Thies and Roberto Cani. This piano and violin duo performed separately in the past to rave reviews. Now they have teamed up to take the performances to even higher levels. This concert was originally schedule in January but had to be rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts. The concert will take place at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Drive in Grass Valley. Visit www.tcca.net for tickets and show time information.

Speaking of NU football, the 2009 Sac Joaquin champs were honored by both the Grass Valley and Nevada City city councils at their respective meetings January 12th and 13th. its run in late February at Off Broad Street in Nevada City.

February 2010
