Notes from the FMP Staff...
T
he theme for this year’s Nevada City 4th of July Parade is “Hometown Heroes.” A gentleman befitting that theme will be the grand marshal. Retired football coach Rich Brooks, who grew up near Alleghany, has accepted an invitation to lead the parade. Brooks stared in football as a defensive back at Oregon State University, graduating in 1963. His first coaching job was as an assistant at Oregon State and later served on staffs at UCLA, the NFL’s St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers before accepting his first head coach position at the University of Oregon in 1977, a position he held until 1994. In his final season at Oregon, Brooks led the Ducks to the Rose Bowl, losing 3820 to undefeated Penn State. That same year he was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year and the National Coach of the Year and was also named head coach of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams, compiling a record of 13-19 in two seasons. Brooks went on be an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 1997 to 2000, which included a trip to the 1998 Super Bowl. In 2003 Brooks got back onto college coaching accepting the head coaching duties at the University of Kentucky, a position he held until announcing his retirement in January of this year.

Hot Rods to rev up Grass Valley
sure sign of warmer weather is the re-appearance of the American hot rod. On Saturday, April 25, some of the areas best supped-up, “muscled up”, chopped and dropped cars and trucks will line Mill Street and West Main Street for the Downtown Grass Valley Car Show. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the car show that in the past has featured up to 300 pre-1972 classic vehicles. Some are restored to their original showroom condition while others are definitely built for speed. The free exhibition will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Many downtown restaurants will be providing varied menus with other merchants open for shopping. To learn more about the event or to register a vehicle for the show contact the Grass Valley Downtown Association at 272-8315 or gvda2@sbcglobal.net. A quick “hot rod” history lesson Hot rods are typically American cars with engines that have been altered for speed. The origin of the term “hot rod” is not officially known. Some say it is a shortened version of “hot roadster.” Another explanation is that since many early models featured exposed exhaust systems, the “hot rod” came from the hot muffler neck when the vehicle was running. The term “hot rod” is believed to first be used during the late 1930s in Southern California. The hot rod’s popularity increased after World War II, particularly in California, due to returning soldiers with technical training in vehicle maintenance. During the 1950’s “hot rod” was sometimes used as a derogatory term describing any car that did not fit into the mainstream. In the 1960’s, hot rods started to take on a more artistic look with engine, body modifications and creative paint jobs leading to the “show and shine” show cars of today.

FMP Car Corner:
Bright Ideas In Energy Efficiency
(NAPS)-Automotive engineers have found a way to increase vehicle fuel economy thanks to a crucial vehicle element that’s often overlooked: lighting. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lighting options are more energy efficient than incandescent or halogen lights. Incandescent bulbs in today’s automotive lighting applications generate more heat than light, requiring more electrical power. A vehicle’s gasoline engine generates electricity but not very efficiently. The more energy needed to run lighting and other systems, the harder the engine has to work, increasing fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, HID lighting uses up to 65 percent less energy and lasts three times longer than standard incandescent

lights, nearly the entire life of the vehicle. HID headlights are also good for the environment. Many are mercury free and their increased efficiency helps reduce vehicle CO2 emissions by more than 2 grams a mile. Many of today’s vehicles use LED signal and tail lighting. For example, the 2010 Ford Mustang uses the OSRAM SYLVANIA Joule(tm) System, which incorporates LEDs into a form
that resembles a typical incandescent bulb, making it easier to adapt the new technology to current vehicle designs. The vehicle’s LED tail lamps use 87 percent less electricity than the incandescent counterparts; that’s an annual savings of more than 10 gallons of gasoline and 205 fewer pounds of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. As more hybrid and electric vehicles come to market, automotive lighting will play an even larger role in contributing to energy efficiency, cost savings and the overall positive effects to the environment. “Once alternative vehicles increase their role or eventually become a highvolume seller in the marketplace, the positive effects felt to the environment and costs will grow in kind through LED lighting,” said David Hulick, global product marketing director for automotive lighting producer OSRAM SYLVANIA. “For example, multiplying savings via lighting by the nearly 250 million registered light-duty vehicles on America’s roads, you can see the impact that LED lighting could have on helping to clean up the environment,” said Hulick. To learn more about automotive lighting, visit www.osram.com.

On the Foothill’s Stage
Apr 2: Flowmotion, Miners Foundry. This five piece band is one of Seattle’s most distinctly diverse rock bands. They fail to fall into an easily packaged genre and succeed in defying stereotypes. Flowmotion is a name well known in the Seattle live music scene and becoming increasingly familiar up and down the West Coast. While the band may be a “best-kept-secret” their live show often exceeds the size of the stage they might find themselves performing on. “A Flowmotion show is a swooping ride through the fingers of rock fueled solely on the expert musicianship of its five parts, producing a sound that’s unmistakably huge.” For ticket and show time information, visit www.minersfoundry.org or call 265-5040. Apr 2 & 3, 9 & 10: Snow Falling on the Cedars, Nevada Theater. The Community Asian Theater of Sierra (CATS) presents this play which centers on the body of a local fisherman found tangled in his net and a Japanese-American fisherman arrested for his murder. The storyline is from the 1994 best-selling novel by David Guterson, winner of the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Prior to the stage adaptation, the story was made into a 1999 movie starring Ethan Hawke and Youki Kudoh. It was adapted to the stage by Kevin McKeon in 2007 and premiered at Book-it Repertory Theatre in Seattle in the same year. Matinee performances are being offered on Sundays. For show times and tickets prices visit www.catsweb.org or call 2656161. Apr. 10: The Sun Kings, Center for the Arts. For years this Bay area band has been thrilling packed houses and outdoor festivals with their musical tribute to The Beatles. Their attention to detail has wowed critics and Beatles fans; many citing the fact that their energy is reminiscent of the joy and excitement felt at a real Beatles concert. Each mem20 Foothills Marketplace ber of The Sun Kings has been a huge Beatles fan since childhood. Even as they pursued their individual musical endeavors, pre-Sun Kings, they all counted The Beatles as their biggest influence. To be part of this musical tribute feels as natural as walking. Warning: They are not John, Paul, George, or Ringo look-alikes but you can expect to hear your favorite Beatles’ songs performed as you’ve come to know and love them. And of course, expect to have a FAB-ulous time (FAB-4 pun, sorry)! The Sun Kings repertoire contains over 100 Beatles’ songs spanning The Beatles entire musical career from “She Loves You” to Side 2 of Abbey Road. For ticket and show time information, visit www.thecenterforthearts.org or call 274-8384.
Apr. 16: The Kingston Trio, Center for the Arts. Only a handful of performers have redefined the content of popular music at critical points in history. The Kingston Trio is one such group, transforming folk music into a hot commodity and creating a demand for acoustic guitars and banjos and singing songs in harmony. On a commercial level, from 1957 until 1963, the Kingston Trio was the most vital and popular folk group in the world. The trio spearheaded a boom in the popularity of folk music that suddenly made it important to millions of listeners. The group was founded in 1957 in Palo Alto, CA. They were booked into the Purple Onion, a leading night spot in San Francisco, opening for comedienne Phyllis Diller. The result was a series of sold-out shows leading to a five month engagement, from June to December of 1957. During that summer, Capitol Records signed them to a seven-year contract. During a tour in the summer of 1957 the group recorded its debut album including a brace of classic Kingston Trio songs such as “Scotch and Soda”, “Hard, Ain’t It Hard”, and “Tom Dooley”, which became a single in July of 1958 spending four months in the Billboard Top Ten and selling over three million copies. In August of 1959 the group was featured on the cover of Life magazine. They were also voted the Best Group of the Year for 1959 by both Billboard and Cashbox magazines, and won two Grammy Awards. The Trio’s record of hits continued unabated. They defined the entire folk-pop April 2010
888-7653
genre in much the same way that the Beach Boys defined surf music and the Beatles later defined the entire British Invasion. The Trio caught a performance by the trio Peter, Paul and Mary, and heard their rendition of “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.” They recorded their own version of the song which became a favorite for millions. In 1981, as part of a concert taped for a public television broadcast, group members gathered together into a sort of Kingston Trio mega-group of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard, John Stewart, George Grove, and Roger Gambill, with Mary Travers as host, and Lindsey Buckingham, a longtime Trio fan, as special guest. The untimely death of Gambill in the late ‘80s led to Nick Reynolds rejoining. Today the Trio, in its 53rd year, consists of Grove, Bill Zorn, and Rick Dougherty. For ticket and show time information, visit www.thecenterforthearts.org or call 274-8384. Apr 17. Coco Montoya, Center for the Arts. Explosive guitar playing and a soul-driven voice have propelled Montoya to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, he has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya’s touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since going out on his own in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. For ticket and show time information, visit www.thecenterforthearts.org or call 274-8384. Apr 18: The Brasil Guitar Duo, Peace Lutheran Church. Classical Guitar Magazine exclaims: “The maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity is simply outstanding.” in describing Jo‹o Luiz and Douglas Lora, the Brasil Guitar Duo. The two were the winner of the 2006 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Equally at home on a Classical or a World Music series, the Duo’s innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditional and Brazilian works, resulting in a full global touring schedule and numerous April 2010
critically acclaimed recordings. The two met in S‹o Paulo, Brazil as teenage guitar students and have been performing together for more than ten years, perfecting a sublime synchronicity and effortless performance style. This performance is part of the Twin Cities Concert Series. For ticket and show time information, visit www.tcca.net or write to TCCA Tickets, PO Box 205, Nevada City, CA 95959. Apr 18: Dan Bern, Center for the Arts. Best known for being a prolific songwriter, Bern has released a dozen albums and has spent well over a decade performing everywhere from coffee shops to Carnegie Hall. He has amassed a strong underground following, built on endless touring and songs of all shapes and sizes. In 2007, Bern focused much of his energy into motion pictures using his talents and sharp wit to compose over a dozen songs for the Jake Kasdan/Judd Apatow music biopic spoof, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.” He also wrote the title song for Jonathan Demme’s documentary, “Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains.” In addition to countless songs, he has written several books of short stories, plus a full-length novel, “Quitting Science.” Some of his paintings have been displayed in hotels and art galleries. He is an award winning sports columnist in the state of New Mexico, tennis pro, and even won an egg eating contest at the 2008 Truth or Consequences Fiesta, devouring 17 eggs in 10 minutes. For ticket and show time information, visit www.thecenterforthearts.org or call 274-8384. Apr 30. The House Jacks, Center for the Arts. They are the original “rock band without instruments.” This San Francisco group uses nothing more than their five voices and mouths to deliver everything from blistering funk to screaming rock to heartmelting ballads. They have performed over 1,000 shows and have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music, performed for live crowds in excess of 100,000 and have made appearances on at least three continents each year. The House Jacks can be also heard on movie soundtracks and their jingles for everything from radio stations to theme parks have been heard and seen by millions around the world.
