July 3: Book Sale, 9:00am to 3:00pm, Doris Foley Historical Library, 211 Pine Street, Nevada City. Most books cost between 25¢ and $3.00. Thousands of paperback and hardback books are included. Call 265-1407 or visit www.friendsofthenevadacountylibraries.org. July 4: “Hometown Hero” Parade, 2:00pm, Nevada City. The USA’s birthday parade will feature more than 100 entries making their way from the top of Broad Street through the center of downtown Nevada City. Parade-goers are advised to bring lawn chairs and arrive early to find a good vantage point. See more information on page 8 and 9. July 4: Entertainment and Fireworks, 3:00pm & 9:30pm, Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley. A traditional family celebration under the pines featuring live music and entertainment, food and refreshments are offered. Fairgrounds gates open at 3:00pm with entertainment beginning at 4:00pm. Admission is $8.00 for adults with children 12 and under admitted free. No alcohol, glass, pets, barbecues or personal fireworks may be brought onto the fairgrounds. The Fireworks Spectacular begins around 9:30pm. See more information on page 8 and 9. July 10 and July 16: Deadlines for Nevada County Fair Entries. The Nevada County Fair’s Competition Handbook, which includes all the information you need to enter exhibits in this year’s Fair is available. There are hundreds of categories and specialty contests for adults and children. Copies of the free handbook are available at the Chamber of Commerce offices, county libraries, at the Fairgrounds’ Office, or on-line at www.NevadaCountyFair.com. The deadline for submitting paper entry forms is July 10 at 1:00pm with the deadline for on-line entries being July 16 at 5:00pm. There is no entry fee if you enter your still exhibit online. July 10: Paula Poundstone, 8:00pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. She is armed with nothing more than a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone’s ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. The show is a winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for Broadcasting excellence. Poundstone was the first woman to win an ACE Award for Best Standup Comedy performance and the first woman to be invited to perform at the distinguished White House Correspondents dinner. She has starred in solo specials on HBO and BRAVO and made frequent TV appearances on David Letterman, Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion”. The Sons of Champlin started as a five piece band in 1965 in Marin County with their name coming from the “front” man, Bill Champlin. The band grew to seven members who recorded seven albums between 1968 and 1977 when the group disbanded. After a twenty year hiatus, in 1997 the Sons reunited for a series of successful reunion shows, with two of the earliest shows taking place at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium where it all began. This reunion lead to new albums being released, including their first ever live album in January 1998. The Sons of Champlin have continued to tour as their schedules have permitted, mostly on the West Coast and in the Pacific Northwest. The Sons first studio album in 28 years, “Hip Li’l Dreams” was released by Dig Music on August 23, 2005 to great reviews. Tickets are $28.00 General Admission, $45.00 VIP and can be

This free outdoor festival features vendors, arts, crafts, classic cars, food and drink, and various styles for live music from some of the foothills leading musician will take place on five separated stages. During the festival, downtown will be closed to motorized traffic. Since the event draws a large crowd, a $5.00 parking and shuttle service (children 12 and under are free) will be offered connecting the parking lots at the Nevada County Government Center on Highway 49 to the downtown festival district. Shuttle hours are 5:30 until 9:30pm each Wednesday of the event. Downtown specialty shops and restaurants will be open for Summer Nights. July 16: The Children’s Festival, two sessions, Pioneer Park, Nevada City. The park becomes a Renaissance Faire for children with over twenty arts and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, a magician, facepainters, bridge-guarding troll, medieval fencing, and Claude,

the life-sized mechanical dragon. Children will be able to make their own costumes, swords, shields and magic wands and engage in wood block construction, soapstone carving and clay modeling. A medieval cardboard castle will be available for all to paint. Last year over 2000 children and adults attended the festival. There will be two sessions, 9:00am - 12:00pm and 5:00pm 8:00pm. After a twenty year hiatus, in 1997 the Sons reunited for a series of successful reunion shows, with two of the earliest shows taking place at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium where it all began. This reunion lead to new albums being released, including their first ever live album in January 1998. The Sons of Champlin have continued to tour as their schedules have permitted, mostly on the West Coast and in the Pacific Northwest.
