Calling all B-B-Q Cooks, Registration of teams for the United Way of Nevada County 4th Annual BBQ Battle is happening now! This year teams will be competing for some valuable prizes. There will be two judging categories; People’s Choice and Critic’s Choice judge’s award. The 4th Annual BBQ Battle will be held Thursday, August 26 at 5:00pm at the Gold Miner Inn, downtown Grass Valley. Raffle prizes given away including a Hawaiian vacation getaway. Live music will be performed by SOLS. All proceeds from this event will go into United Way Nevada County’s Community Investment Fund to be shared among their 20 partner agencies. Last year’s Idol Competition winner Katie Heward (pictured), received $575 for her charity Sierra Services for the Blind. Early entry is encouraged as there is a limit of 20 contestants for this event. The entry fee is $5.00 with entries closed on Friday, August 6 at 5:00pm. All contestants will receive a free admission pass to the Fair on Wednesday. The “King and I” auditions are coming up on Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29 at St. Joseph’s Cultural Center in Grass Valley. The Rodgers and Hammerstein play is being presented by The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) March 17 to April 16, 2011, at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City. Callbacks will be announced at a later date with play rehearsals scheduled to start in December. They are looking for actors of all ages singers and dancers. Nevada City. This is the last concert of the “pop series” season. You are invited to bring your picnic basket, lawn chairs, and blankets and enjoy the 50-piece band of local musician’s renditions of big band, pop, classics, folk, and show tunes. Admission is free. Aug 26: Asleep at the Wheel, 7:30pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. The nine time Grammy winning “Kings of Country Swing” continue their 40 plus year musical journey This legendary group has recorded over 25 albums, including 2009’s “Willie at the Wheel” recorded with Willie Nelson. Founder and front man Ray Benson has seen the Wheel re-invent itself many times from a personnel standpoint, but the band has always stayed true to it county swing roots. These days, the Wheel is rolling down a couple of new avenues. One involves to the critically acclaimed musical play, “A Ride with Bob”, which stars Benson as himself encountering the ghost of Bob Wills on a tour bus. Originally designed as a one-off celebration of Wills’ 100th birthday in ‘05, “A Ride with Bob” quickly took on a life of its own and, notes Benson, “it’s absolutely a part of what we do now.” Another success has been the adaptation of the Wheel’s repertoire for pops symphony. Performances with Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth & Amarillo symphonies have drawn record crowds. The Wheel’s new look is also spotlighted in several new discs, the first called, “Reinventing the Wheel”. The 12-cut celebration of American, particularly Southwestern, music features guest appearances by gospel’s Blind Boys of Alabama. Tickets are $45.00. The Miners’ Picnic was once a fund-raiser for miners injured or killed in the gold mines. Now it is a community-wide event and is enjoyed by all ages featuring family-oriented activities such as cake walks and ladies slipper kicking contests. There are also free old-fashioned children’s games such as three-legged, gunny sack, and egg on spoon races, beanbag toss, and a clown. For a small fee guests can also pan for gold. A silent auction will be held in the Clubhouse starting at 11:00am with all bidding stopped at 2:00pm. All proceeds remain at the Park and are used to restore the historic buildings and grounds, or to enhance educational opportunities for the public. There will be live entertainment in the afternoon with August 2010

Aug 28: Mavis Staples in concert, 7:30pm, North Star House, Grass Valley. Legendary R&B, Soul singer and Grammy winner Mavis Staples, will perform at the Nevada County Land Trust’s 9th Annual Benefit Concert. Staples is a rhythm and blues, gospel singer and civil rights activist who recorded with The Staple Singers, her family’s band. The Staple Singers hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, including two No. 1 singles, “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do It Again”. The “King and I” auditions are coming up on Saturday and Sunday, August 28 and 29 at St. Joseph’s Cultural Center in Grass Valley. The Rodgers and Hammerstein play is being presented by The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) March 17 to April 16, 2011, at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City. Callbacks will be announced at a later date with play rehearsals scheduled to start in December. They are looking for actors of all ages singers and dancers. Nevada City. This is the last concert of the “pop series” season. You are invited to bring your picnic basket, lawn chairs, and blankets and enjoy the 50-piece band of local musician’s renditions of big band, pop, classics, folk, and show tunes. Admission is free. Aug 26: Asleep at the Wheel, 7:30pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. The nine time Grammy winning “Kings of Country Swing” continue their 40 plus year musical journey This legendary group has recorded over 25 albums, including 2009’s “Willie at the Wheel” recorded with Willie Nelson. Founder and front man Ray Benson has seen the Wheel re-invent itself many times from a personnel standpoint, but the band has always stayed true to it county swing roots. These days, the Wheel is rolling down a couple of new avenues. One involves to the critically acclaimed musical play, “A Ride with Bob”, which stars Benson as himself encountering the ghost of Bob Wills on a tour bus. Originally designed as a one-off celebration of Wills’ 100th birthday in ‘05, “A Ride with Bob” quickly took on a life of its own and, notes Benson, “it’s absolutely a part of what we do now.” Another success has been the adaptation of the Wheel’s repertoire for pops symphony. Performances with Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth & Amarillo symphonies have drawn record crowds. The Wheel’s new look is also spotlighted in several new discs, the first called, “Reinventing the Wheel”. The 12-cut celebration of American, particularly Southwestern, music features guest appearances by gospel’s Blind Boys of Alabama. Tickets are $45.00. The Miners’ Picnic was once a fund-raiser for miners injured or killed in the gold mines. Now it is a community-wide event and is enjoyed by all ages featuring family-oriented activities such as cake walks and ladies slipper kicking contests. There are also free old-fashioned children’s games such as three-legged, gunny sack, and egg on spoon races, beanbag toss, and a clown. For a small fee guests can also pan for gold. A silent auction will be held in the Clubhouse starting at 11:00am with all bidding stopped at 2:00pm. All proceeds remain at the Park and are used to restore the historic buildings and grounds, or to enhance educational opportunities for the public. Legendary R&B, Soul singer and Grammy winner Mavis Staples, will perform at the Nevada County Land Trust’s 9th Annual Benefit Concert. Staples is a rhythm and blues, gospel singer and civil rights activist who recorded with The Staple Singers, her family’s band. The Staple Singers hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, including two No. 1 singles, “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do It Again”. Pre-concert festivities begin at 4:00pm with food, wine, and beverages available for purchase. Local rhythm and blues vocalist Lorraine Gervais and the Burning Sensations Band will open the night’s concert and celebration of the Land Trust’s 20th anniversary.
