Foothills Celebration: A day of wine, food and shopping
This is one day that offers at least one element of enjoyment for even the most humbug of person who dreads the thought of shopping. Saturday, March 5th the Grass Valley Downtown Association and Sierra Vinters team up for the Annual Foothills Celebration. It is truly a unique days that combines wine, food, ambiance, music, art and shopping. This is the tenth year for the event that not only grows in popularity with those in attendance but also continues to grown in participants. Last year the event was a sell out with 1,200 tickets sold and over 65 wineries, restaurants and business involved. This year’s event is on course to have even more participants. The Foothills Celebration runs from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The event begins at the Holiday Inn Express on Bank Street and will lead you to participating merchants on Mill and West Main Streets and breweries but also sample chef specialties from some of the areas finest restaurants. There will also be fine art on display as well as music. And did we mention the shopping as many downtown retail businesses will set aside floor space to transform into temporary tasting rooms. This is a rain or shine event and can act as great therapy for a late winter foothills weekend. According to www.nswinecountry.com, Nevada County has 18 wineries that produce over 40,000 cases of wine each year. There are 48 different varietals planted in the county. Not all varieties are made into individual wines, some go into blends. With the area’s four distinct seasons, the vines thrive. In the summer a combination of cool nights and warm days produces highly desirable wine making fruit. Brochures and wine touring maps are available at area Chambers of Commerce or any local tasting room. Foothills Celebrations tickets are $30.00 per person advanced and $40.00 per person the day of the event. Tickets are available at all Grass Valley and Nevada City wine tasting rooms, the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce office, on line at www.nswinecountry.com or by calling 272-8315.
in downtown Grass Valley. You will be able to not only taste wine and beer from over 40 area wineries

Their business is all about a good night sleep
Gene and Betty Ernst ventured out into the world of owning their own business selling gift items at Denio’s Farmers Market and Swap Meet in Roseville, California. As the business grew the married couple decided they wanted to have a location closer to their Chicago Park home so in 1983 they opened Foothill Trading Company in Grass Valley’s K-Mart Shopping Center. The store not only featured popular gift items from their days of selling at Denio’s but also a small amount of headboards and footboards. After a few years the couple noticed the popularity of their bedding line. In 1993 they decided it was time to find a larger store
location which would allow for expansion of their bedding merchandise. This led them to their current location on Freeman Lane in the Raley’s Shopping Center. Eventually the business became focused on selling bedding items and less on gift items. The change in business focus also caused the business to take on a new name...Foothill Mattress

Center. Today the gift items are gone. They have been replaced by the largest in store selection of mattresses in Northern California. Sixty-two floor models in all. The store floor space is filled with top selling brand names such as Tempur-pedic, Simmon’s Beautyrest, Sealy Posturepedic and Englander Latex. Walls of Foothill Mattress Center display a large and varied selection of head and footboards. One of the store’s more unique and popular items is the space saving Wall Bed that transforms from a beautiful piece of furniture into a queen size bed in just seconds. In addition to bedding items, shoppers can also find bedroom furnishings as well as sofas, loveseats and recliners. Gene Ernst passed away four years ago, but Betty and son David continue to run the business in a family way. “Our business is not what we do, it’s a part of who we are” according to Betty. “Customer service and great prices has always been the cornerstones of our business”. Foothill Mattress Center backs up custom satisfaction with a 30 day “Comfort Exchange” on mattresses sold along with free delivery. “We’ve free delivered as far away as San Jose and Tahoe” said Betty. Foothill Mattress Company is open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday 10:00am to 5:30pm and Sunday noon to 4:00pm. You can also learn more about their business and merchandise by visiting their web site at www.foothill-mattress.com.

Italian “home made” that you can take home
For years Theresa Brenner worked as a head checker in a grocery store in Santa Cruz, California. Her experience at watching what people were buying and talking with grocery shoppers helped to lead her to a realization that the Santa Cruz area was in need of a business that specialized in fine, fresh pasta. Theresa gained many hours of kitchen training from her mother who “was always

making fresh food from scratch.” In 1989 she took her cooking fresh food from scratch training and started the Santa Cruz Pasta Factory. The company slogan became “Everything is homemade, right down to the noodle.” The business produced fresh pasta, sauces, ravioli and other Italian delights daily. The wholesale side of the business took off with over 100 Santa Cruz area restaurants and vendors using their products. In 2008 Theresa met Carl and soon they were married. At the time Carl was working for the National Parks Service but helping Theresa with her business. Late last year the couple decided they needed to move to the Foothills to help care for Theresa’s mother and father who live in Grass Valley. According to Carl, their current 109 Bank Street location was the first property they looked at, but while they viewed other locations, including Auburn, “something just kept calling us back here.” “Something kept telling us this was the right place.” So after some interior remodeling The Bear River Pasta Company was born. When visiting Bear River Pasta Company you have two choices; you can eat in or you can take out. They have a wide selection of ready-to-heat and serve gourmet meals such as Cheese Ravioli, Fettucini Alfredo, Linguine and Clams, Spaghetti with meatballs, marinara or meat sauce, or Stuffed Eggplant. You can purchase a variety of stuffed pasta such as chicken, meat or crab ravioli. Try some fresh pasta (egg, garlic, spinach, tomato garlic and more) or pasta salads (Italian bean, tortellini, antipasto and more). All are priced by the pound. The menu features a selection of homemade sauces from Alfredo and Pesto to Tomato Basil, White Clam, Garden Marinara and more. Bear River Pasta Company also features a selection of deli items, sandwiches and soups. Again, you can eat it there in a deli atmosphere or take it with you. And for the dessert lovers, there’s Cannoli, Gelato and Tiramisu. Pasta Trays are a great idea for gatherings of any size. According to Theresa “they are made to order for a single
person or for up to 25.” Carl adds, “We use only the finest ingredients. Our pastas are made from 100% semolina flour. We do not use any artificial flavorings or preservatives. Even our herb pastas are made with selected dried herbs.” Bear River Pasta Company is located at 109 Bank Street on the west end of the Holiday Inn Express in Grass Valley. They are open Monday through Saturday 10:00am to 8:00pm and Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. For catering or product information, call 274-1760.

Community Event Mardi Gras comes March-ing to Nevada City
An event that is usually associated with the month of February will have an early March date in 2011. Nevada City’s Mardi Gras celebration will take place on Saturday, March 5th and 6th. Why the later date? It’s all based on when “Fat Tuesday” is celebrated. Here’s were the math begins! Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is 46 days prior to Easter. So how do we know when to celebrate Easter? Stay with me...The exact date of Easter coincides with the first full moon after the spring equinox, and that can be on any Sunday between March 23rd and April 25th. This year those events makes Easter fall on April 24th meaning Ash Wednesday is March 9th and “Fat Tuesday”, the kickoff date of Mardi Gras, is March 8th. Phew. So, technically the Nevada City Mardi Gras celebration is a few days early in relationship to the celebration that takes place in New Orleans
which starts on March 8th. Nevada City’s Mardi Gras will once again feature a variety of popular activities. On Saturday night the festivities open with a Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball at the Miners Foundry, 325 Spring Street. Cajun food will be available for purchase along with live music from the Holcomb Bros. band. . Masquerade Ball tickets are $10.00 advance and $15.00 at the door. Advance tickets are recommended as this event is known to sell out. Tickets can be purchased at the Nevada City Chamber Office
888-7653
at 132 Main Street or by calling (530) 265-2692. On Sunday, the Mardi Gras Street Faire will be held on North Pine Street from 11:00am to 4:00pm. This is a free event featuring vendor merchandise and crafts along with food and drink concessions. The Mardi Gras Parade begins at 2:00pm with the parade route moving down Broad Street as masked societies parade through the historic district handing out beads, toys, trinkets, bangles and more. This is a rain or shine event. If you have an organization or group that would like to be part of this year’s parade, contact the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce. There is a $25.00 entry fee. Entries are welcomed from individuals, groups, marching bands, floats, classic cars or equestrians. For more information, contact the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce at (530) 265-2692 or visit their web site at www.nevadacitychamber.org.

President’s Day
So why do we celebrate Presidents’ Day in February?
Monday February 21st is Presidents’ Day, a day off for many as it is a federal holiday. But why do we celebrate our leaders in February? Is it because our first President, George Washington was born on February 22nd? Add to that, one of the countries favorite former presidents, Abraham Lincoln, was born on February 12th. Of the 44 men who have held the office of the Presidency only two others were born in February, William Henry Harrison (Feb. 9th) and California’s own Ronald Reagan (Feb 6th). Maybe we should celebrate Presidents’ Day in October, the month with the most presidential birthdays with six. June and September would be out of the running as they each feature only one. all federal offices in the country. In 1968 Congress voted down a measure that would rename the day Presidents’ Day. On January 1, 1971, the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act with the purpose of not to honor any particular President, but to honor the office of the Presidency. The name Presidents’ Day, while still not an act of Congress, became popular in the mid-1980’s when advertisers started using the term. It was especially popular with furniture stores and auto dealerships. And the name stuck. Today the name Presidents’ Day has been accepted by most citizens, states and makers of calendars.
Presidents’ Day kind of started in 1880 when Washington’s Birthday was declared a federal holiday only in Washington, DC. It was the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen. In 1885 it was expanded by Congress to include

On the Foothill Stage
Feb17: Meri St. Mary & Genelle Chaconas, 7:30pm, Center for the Arts Granucci Room, Grass Valley. The Nevada County Poetry Series brings Nevada County’s own Meri St. Mary and Sacramento’s rising star Genelle Chaconas to the stage. Nevada County Poetry Series board member, Bill Gainer says, “St. Mary and Chaconas bring fresh voices of excitement to the stage. Their work travels though a world of avant-garde image and unrestrained experimentation. From the fringes of chaos they rearrange the puzzle of the everyday! Their words tease the page to tell the truth.” St. Mary is a musician, writer, artist, radio personality and a punk poet chanteuse. Her poetry is published in the literary magazines Chiron Review and Out of Our. Since the early 80’s, she has performed music & spoken word across the country. Chaconas has been published in Medusa’s Kitchen, Heavy Bear, Rattlesnake Review, Calaveras Station, Six Foot Swells and Brevities.” Chaconas is most proud to have contributed to a collection of poetry written by B.L. Kennedy and to have written the preface to his book, Neurosonnets. Tickets are $5.00 at the door for all ages. For more information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext 14. Feb 17 - Mar 13: Marry Me A Little, A dramatic revue featuring songs by Stephen Sondheim, Off Center Stage, 315 Richardson Street, Grass Valley. What do you do if you are a Broadway composer and lyricist who has written a song for your new musical, and it turns out that the show is running too long? Or the song interrupts the action at the wrong time? Or the director decides the song is not quite right and needs to be replaced? You file away your unperformed song, move on, and occasionally perform the song for your friends at parties. Or, if you happen to be Stephen Sondheim, you mention that you have a trunk full of unperformed songs to a chorus member during rehearsals for your musical “Sweeney Todd”, and the next thing you know, you are choosing 17 of the songs and putting them together into a one act, two-character dramatic revue, entitled Marry Me A Little . Sierra Stages presents the Nevada County premiere of Marry Me A Little as part of its Off Season at the Off Center series. Perfomance witll take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with Sunday matinees. Not just a stand-and-sing revue, Marry Me A Little tells the story of two single strangers in New York City who find themselves alone in their studio apartments on a Saturday night, passing their time with sweetly secret, unshared fantasies. A handful of songs and the musicals from which they were cut may be familiar to Sondheim fans and to audience members who attended Sierra Stages’ production of Side by Side by Sondheim in 2009. Tickets are $15.00 for all performances and available online at www.SierraStages.org. or by calling 346-3210. Feb 18: Kevin Burke and Cal Scott, 8:00pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Kevin Burke is one of the commanding presences in Irish music today. Early in his career he established himself as one of Ireland’s premier fiddlers. He is inextricably linked in the annals of traditional music with his role in the near-legendary Bothy Band in the 1970s and its ground-breaking arrangements that paved the way for bands which have since followed it. Cal Scott is a remarkable multi-instrumentalist whose professional credentials span a wide range of music, from traditional music to bluegrass to jazz and everything in between. He plays guitar, but also bass and brass. He plays and sings in the 8-piece folk ensemble The Trail Band. Burke and Scott met each other while Scott was working on a documentary about Northern Ireland and Burke was brought in as a consultant. This musical collaboration led to their working on their CD Across the Black River and deciding on a tour. Tickets are $20.00 for members and $23.00 for non members. For more information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext 14. Feb 19: Lavay Smith and Her Hot Skillet Lickers, 8:00pm Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Bay Area swing diva Lavay Smith incorporates blues, New Orleans R&B, salsa, jump blues and bebop with her band, the Red Hot Skillet Lickers. Smith began singing in 1988 with an L.A. trio called Bogrumpus, which featured pianist/arranger Chris Siebert. The following year Siebert and Smith moved to San Francisco and began building the Skillet Lickers’ lineup. The group toured the US and Europe consistently before recording One Hour Mama in 1996. The album and the group’s performances were critically acclaimed in publications like The San Francisco Chronicle, Downbeat, and Los Angeles Magazine. After more touring and appearances at blues and jazz festivals, Lavay Smith & In 2000 The Red Hot Skillet Lickers released their second album Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Miss Thing! on San Francisco’s Fat Note Records. Tickets are $22.00 for members and $25.00 for non members. For more information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext 14. Feb 20: Petite Panache, Ken Hardin and Friends, 2:00pm, Seventh-day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. Artistic Director and pianist Ken Hardin and pianist Aileen James are joined by violinist Richard Altenbach and cellist Wolf Sebastian for a program with many wonderful surprises. Rupa & the April Fishes hold up a carnival mirror to life and present a warped, humorous and occasionally disquieting reflection. Sequestered beneath Rupa’s infectious and captivating melodies are thought-provoking themes that address life, love, art, death and the real and artificial divisions that keep us apart. Although Rupa and the April Fishes are based in San Francisco, California, their music is a specifically locale-free style of pan-culturalism, with lead singer and songwriter Marya singing not only in English, but also French, Spanish, Hindi and the Roma language of the Gypsies. The band’s debut album, Extraordinary Rendition, was released in 2007. Their latest release is entitled Este Mundo. Tickets are $15.00 for members and $18.00 for non members. For more information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext 14. Mar 4: Burnal Equinox featuring Albino!, 7:00pm, Miners Foundry, Nevada City. festival which happens each Labor Day will enjoy this event. Fire Spinning Performance by BeOnFire, inclusive explosive fun, Poi dancers and a costume contest with emphasis on playa finery with all be part of this event. Mar 5: Sista Monica Parker and Her All-Star Band Dance Concert, 8:00pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Parker cites Al Green, Aretha Franklin, the Staple Singers, Jackie Wilson, and Sam Cooke as early influences. Inspired by her neighbor MC Hammer, Parker decided to turn her longtime love of singing into more than just an avocation. She began sharing stages in Northern California clubs and festivals with Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Taj Mahal, Luther Allison, Etta James, and other blues and classic R&B legends. By 1995, she had recorded and released her debut, Get Outta My Way! In 2001, she released her first gospel album, Gimme That Old Time Religion, In 2004, she re-emerged on the scene and recorded an album of soul and jazz standards popularized by Ray Charles and Dinah Washington, Love, Soul & Spirit, Vol. 1. Her latest release, Can’t Keep a Good Woman Down!, showcases her abilities as a blues and classic R&B vocalist. Tickets are $20.00.
