Community Event
Dad’s Day weekend of racing in Nevada City
Saturday, June 18, Nevada City Adult Soap Box Derby. Gravity powered, mobile creations will be making their way down Nevada City’s Nimrod Street to Pioneer Park. According the web site www.ncderby.com the mission of the race is to “provide a fun event for the entire community that is family friendly and enjoyable for all ages”. The response to the first time event has been great as all 42 entry slots have been filled. Beginning at 10:00am the soap races to determine their average race course time. Racers with the fastest average times will move on to the championship rounds which should conclude around 4:00pm. Besides having a lot of fun, the purpose of the Adult Soap Box Derby is to raise money to benefit improvements at Nevada City’s Pioneer Park. The objective will be for these improvements to be immediately attainable within 12 months, so that the community and participants can see and enjoy the benefits of their participation in this year’s event. Money raised from the “green” event will come from the $150.00 entry fee. There is no cost to watch the Derby. Some of the ideas being considered for improving Pioneer Park amenities include Bocce Ball courts, a multi-use path for biking/jogging/walking, and addition seating around the swimming pool. Derby participants will be competing for prizes in speed and creativity in car design. Sunday, June 19, Nevada City Bicycle Classic. Community Merchant Gray Street Clothing expands to larger space
Tammy Baxter opened Gray Street Clothing last June at 1240 East Main Street in Grass Valley. The quaint 400 square foot store specialized in juniors and young men’s clothing and accessories. One year later, Gray Street Clothing has expanded into a new 1,200 square foot location at 1200 East Main Street across the parking lot from their original location. The space was previously occupied by Extreme Outfitters Bikes. “We listened to our customers and expanded our store to include both women’s and junior’s fashion apparel and accessories” said Baxter. “We are extremely grateful to our loyal customers and the community for their support which has enabled us to expand in just our first year of business! This is a rare occurrence especially in such a difficult economy.” Gray Street Clothing carries a variety of fashion apparel with most items priced under $20.00. “We buy goods from both the LA market and East Coast” according to Baxter. “We hand pick merchandise that is in current fashion, great quality & prices. We also carry off-priced name brand items that you would find in major department stores and are thrilled to pass the savings onto our customers”. The new store location features a “Denim Bar” with premium denim jeans with such brands as; L.A. Idol, Silver Jeans, Lucky Brand, Buffalo and more. The larger store also allows more room to support local area artists with an expanded selection of handcrafted jewelry and accessories. Gray Street Clothing is very excited about the newly formed collaboration with Cranston & Co Hair Studio. The two are now adjoined by means of
a walk though wall. “This offers a unique and intimate full service boutique experience seldom found in rural counties” said Baxter. Cranston & Co Hair Studio is owned by Sarah Cranston, who is a 13 year Nevada County “hair artist”. Baxter is excited about Gray

Taking odor out of painting projects
(ARA) - Homeowners can scratch off one more concern from their list when tackling a painting project: Nearly every paint manufacturer now offers no-odor or low-odor alternatives. Combined with sensible steps to reduce odors and speed drying, painting today doesn’t have to be the stinky business your parents experienced. Home improvement expert Gordon Blickle notes that painting is a growing trend in decorating. “In today’s market, homeowners are staying in their homes longer and redecorating more,” he says. When decorating, homeowners want simple, low cost, but dramatic home improvements to renew and personalize their space. As a result, Blickle notes, “changing and upgrading room colors has become one of the hottest decor trends.” But with all this decorating, exposure to chemical fumes has opened the door for a new wave of smart paints, caulks and spackling that please the
nose as well as the eye. Traditional paints create chemical fumes that can harmfully affect people and the environment. Chemical fumes can affect the earth’s ozone layer and increase hazards to those with breathing problems. Eliminating these fumes Continued on page 15

Paint
Continued from page 8 to protect air quality is a hot-button issue for lawmakers. Local, state and federal laws now limit chemicals that affect air quality, and legislators have helped reduce volatile chemicals in paints and coatings dramatically in the past decade. Choose healthier, zero-VOC products. In most paints, caulks and spackling, the drying process means chemicals like ammonia and mineral spirits evaporate into the air. They can irritate many people and even prove dangerous for small children and people with asthma and chronic respiratory conditions. Many popular water-based paints and caulks emit these odors, produced by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that are now limited and in some areas, virtually eliminated. While not completely odorless, new zero-VOC water-based latex paints have extremely low odor. Coupled with Smart zero-VOC primers, caulks and spackling, painters and homeowners now have the ability to create a complete zero-VOC painting project. Air it out and start early. When beginning a painting project, open windows and doors for proper air flow. Create cross-ventilation by opening doors and windows outside the room. While that may mean spreading the fumes throughout the home, good ventilation means that odors will be gone faster. Add fans and a dehumidifier for even faster drying and reduced fumes. Keep doors and windows open during the entire drying process. Time of day can make a difference too. “Since most of us want to close up our homes at night,” Blickle adds, “painting in the morning will give you the longest time for drying paint to air out.” Clean up right away ... with water. A final way to lower fumes and odor is to seal containers immediately and clean up painting tools right away. Most brushes, roller covers and other painting tools are reusable, saving you money and keeping them out of landfills. The longer they air-dry, the more paint fumes escape into the air your family breathes. If you clean them immediately, you can use water; waiting means either using smelly mineral spirits, or throwing them away. The removal of VOCs and odors from paints, caulks and other painting necessities creates a healthier and more pleasant way to decorate.

Celebrate “Active Liberty” this 4th of July in Grass Valley
A band of local musicians playing great All-American music, a colorful parade through downtown Grass Valley, and the Sierra foothills’ largest aerial fireworks display top the 2011 Fourth of July celebration in Grass Valley/Nevada City. America’s 235th birthday celebration will kick off with a free concert by the Nevada County Community Band in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot at the corner of Mill and Neal Streets in downtown Grass Valley. The concert will start at 10:00am. At 11:00am, a classic “hometown parade” will wind its way through downtown Grass Valley. The parade will start at the top of Main Street and then proceed down Mill Street. Again this year, more than 100 parade entries are expected. The theme of this year’s parade is “Active
Liberty”. The annual parade rotates each year between Grass Valley and Nevada City. Parade-goers are advised to bring lawn chairs and arrive early to find a good vantage point. Following the parade is a traditional family celebration under the pines at the Nevada County

and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, a magician, facepainters, a bridge-guarding troll, medieval fencing, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon. The Festival was in 1971 and continued as an annual summer event for 19 years. In 2003 it was revived as a memorial tribute to one of its founders Ilse Barnhart. The Festival gives children of all ages a chance to enjoy a time of low-tech fun, where imagination, not automation, rules the day. At the festival, children will be able to make their own costumes, swords, shields and magic wands. They can also engage in wood block construction, soapstone carving and clay modeling. A medieval cardboard castle will be available for all to paint. Last year an estimated 2,000 children and adults attended the festival. This year’s Children’s Festival has two sessions, 9:00am to12:00pm and 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Admission to each session is $3.00. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Community Event Summer Reading Program offered at local libraries
Submitted by Laura Pappani, Children’s Librarian Get your passport to great stories at the Nevada County Library’s summer reading program! Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as Nevada County Library presents “One World, Many Stories” through performances, activities, story times, a reading program, and more. The 2011 Summer Reading Program is absolutely free and is open to young people of all ages. For the second year, the Nevada County Libraries will continue its popular collaboration with the Nevada County Fair. Throughout the summer, kids can decorate paper “nuggets” with their favorite book title, book character, or scene from a book. The “nuggets” will be displayed in a Gold Rush-themed library display during the fair. The Nevada County Fair is providing bookmarks for each child who signs up for the summer reading program. In addition, all children who complete the program will receive a voucher that they can exchange at the fairgrounds for two free carnival rides. The summer reading program signups began the first week in June but individuals are still welcome to come into the Madelyn Helling Library, Grass Valley Library, Penn Valley Station, and Bear River Station to receive a sign-up packet that includes a reading log, stickers, and activity book. Every Thursdays 11:00am, join us for special

programs organized around cultural themes at either Grass Valley Library or Madelyn Helling Library. On June 23, kids can make musical instruments at the Grass Valley Library. On June 30, come to the Madelyn Helling Library for African movement and cultural exchange with Tribal Fusion, Moussa Camara, and Sorcha Malick. On July 7, Izzi Tooinsky will tell stories from around the world at the Madelyn Helling Library. On July 14, the theme will be games from around the world at the Grass Valley Library. Our regularly-scheduled preschool story times will focus on a different country each week throughout June and July. Preschool story times are held at the Madelyn Helling Library on Tuesdays at 10:30am. The Celebration Party on Wednesday, July 20, will feature wild animals from around the world from Wild Things, as well as refreshments and a chance to pick up prizes for participation: a free book and a voucher for two free carnival rides at the Nevada County Fair. The party at Grass Valley will take place at 11:00am and the party at Madelyn Helling Library will be at 2:00pm. All summer reading programming is sponsored by Friends of the Nevada County Libraries and made possible by the energy and dedication of our wonderful volunteers. Now - June 26: The Full Monty - The Musical”, Thursdays - 7:00pm, Fridays - 8:00pm, Saturdays 2:00pm and 8:00pm, Sundays 2:00pm, Nevada City Theatre, Nevada City. This is the story of six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers, low on both cash and prospects, who decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives’ enthusiasm for a touring company of Chippendales. One of them, Jerry, declares that their show will be better than the Chippendales dancers because they’ll go “the full monty” - strip all the way. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, selfconsciousness, and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie. The play contains adult content, so admittance is for those 18 years and over. Tickets are $25.00 for Thursdays, $30.00 Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances. June 24: Al Jardine’s “Endless Summer Beach Party” Dance Concert, 8:00pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Al Jardine is a founding member of the Beach Boys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group in 1988. In 2001 the group received a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy. Jardine was the band’s rhythm guitarist, harmony vocalist, and lead singer on songs such as the number one hit “Help Me, Rhonda.” Beginning with the “Friends” album, Jardine also wrote or co-wrote a number of songs for the band, the most notable of which is probably “California Saga: California” from the “Holland” album in 1973. During the “Pet Sounds” sessions, he was the one that suggested to Brian Wilson that the group record “Sloop John B.” His new solo album, “A Postcard from California”, features appearance by all the surviving Beach Boys along with guest spots by Neil Young, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Flea, Glen Campbell, Alec Baldwin and Steve Miller. Jardine is currently touring with the Endless Summer Band. “I can’t do my new material exclusively,” he says. “People expect Beach Boys songs.” Jardine is already penning songs for his next album. “The Beach Boys don’t record anymore and I miss it,” he says. “I’ve still got a lot of music in me.” This is a dance concert featuring theater seating on a first come basis with plenty of room to dance. Tickets are $35.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members. For information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext.114. June 25: Chris Robinson Brotherhood, 8:00pm, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. Chris Robinson and the Black Crowes have cultivated a dedicated audience that ensures they will go down as one of the most respected and wellliked roots rockers of the 1990s. Going back to a classic sound in the mold of Humble Pie and the Faces, the Black Crowes were one of the few truly popular bands to continue making rock music that wasn’t rooted in a particular decade during the era of hair metal and grunge. Following the Black Crows last tour in 2010, their second hiatus is underway and Robinson has wasted little time in getting on with his next project Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Their inaugural tour began March 28 and is careening about California. At their sold-out April 8 concert in Sacramento it was reported they “blew the doors off”. Surprise guests have included appearances by Jackie Greene and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir. For the Center for the Arts concert Robinson says, “Joining myself will be Neal Casal on guitar, Adam MacDougall on keyboards, George Sluppick on drums and Mark “Muddy” Dutton on Bass. “We’ll be playing a bunch of new songs I have been working on and will be digging deep into what is happening at that musical moment. There will be old
stuff that I’ve done and a handful of covers that just feel right.” Tickets are $20.00. For information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext.114. July 9 & 10: The Music of Fleetwood Mac, presented by Lorraine Gervais, 8:00pm Saturday, 7:00pm Sunday, Center for the Arts, Grass Valley. “Fleetwood Mac seemed like a really fun summertime show as so many people have great memories of those classic rock/pop tunes from the 70’s and 80’s”, said Gervais. As always, Gervais has asked another great group of musician friends to join her onstage. Singers Kate Haight, Jenn Knapp, and Taylor Bowen along with long time local favorite, Tom MacDonald, will be sharing vocals. “We all have our favorite tunes to sing which makes it so much fun. Everybody gets a turn to stretch out and make that song come alive”, Gervais says. “I decided to include a few of the old tunes that Peter Green & Bob Welch were a part of, in addition to the newer songs when they were replaced with Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks, who brought in a whole new sound for the band. We’ll be playing such classics as “Go Your Own Way”, “Oh Well”, “Landslide”, “The Chain”, “Bare Trees”, and “Rhiannon” to name a tiny fraction of the songs.” Tickets are $22.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members. For information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext.114.

The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1804. The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826. In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, a magician, facepainters, a bridge-guarding troll, medieval fencing, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon.

For details on any of the programs, please check the library website starting in late May at www.mynevadacounty.com/library.

Group discounts are available for parties of ten or more. To purchase tickets and more pricing options, call (530) 430-SHOW. June 17: Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, 8:00pm, Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Grass Valley. Over the last few years, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has performed collaborations with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, and the Russian National Orchestra. They have also been featured in several education and performance residencies in the last few years, including those in Vienne, France, Perugia, Italy, Prague, Czech Republic, London, Berlin, Sao Paulo, and Yokohama, Japan. Tickets are $45.00 for members and $55.00 for non-members. For information, visit www.centerforthearts.org or call 274-8384, ext.114.
